What kind of medications can I get prescribed online?
Psychiatrists and psychiatric providers may prescribe a variety of psychiatric medications depending on their patient’s specific mental health condition, medication tolerance, and symptoms. Psychiatrists may prescribe more than one drug if one isn’t working to cover all symptoms. Many people have more than one mental health condition as well, and they may need more than one prescription to manage the symptoms of multiple conditions.
Licensed psychiatrists can prescribe any medication they deem medically necessary to help manage or reduce mental health condition symptoms. However, online psychiatric providers may have some restrictions on whether or not they provide controlled substances like certain ADHD medications and sedatives. Make sure to ask your provider what medications they are able to prescribe before starting. Note: Talkspace does not prescribe controlled substances.
Can I get a new prescription or prescription refill online from Talkspace?
Yes, you can make an appointment with a Talkspace online psychiatric provider to get a new prescription or prescription renewal online. You will need to have an initial consultation with a psychiatric provider where they’ll evaluate your symptoms, history, and overall health, and then they will write you a prescription, if they determine it’s medically appropriate. They will send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice.
Can I use my health insurance for online prescriptions and refills?
Yes, many health insurance providers cover appointments with licensed online psychiatrists or psychiatric providers and any medication prescribed. If your insurance plan covers Talkspace we will bill your health insurance directly for your care. The pharmacy that fills your prescription will bill your pharmacy benefits plan for your medication. Check with your specific insurance provider or plan to confirm coverage of online medication prescriptions and refills from an online psychiatrist.
Do online doctors and providers on Talkspace prescribe controlled substances?
No, online psychiatric providers at Talkspace do not prescribe controlled substances like certain ADHD medications and sedatives.
Can I get a prescription without seeing a doctor?
You can only receive a prescription from a medical professional who is licensed to prescribe medication, including doctors (MDs) and licensed psychiatric providers (often nurse practitioners, or NPs, with specialization in mental health care).
To receive a prescription for mental health medication, you first need an appointment with an online psychiatric provider. They will evaluate your symptoms, health, and family history and work with you to prescribe the right medication if needed. Once they prescribe you medication, you can get the prescription sent to a local pharmacy of your choice.
How much does an online doctor prescription and refill visit cost at Talkspace?
Talkspace is in-network with most major insurance plans, so if your insurance plan covers Talkspace you’ll probably only have to pay a copay and may not have to pay anything for your psychiatric care. The average copay is $15, but many Talkspace members pay $0. If you don’t have insurance or your insurance doesn’t accept Talkspace, you can pay out-of-pocket. Without insurance it costs $299 for an initial psychiatric evaluation and prescription, and follow-up appointments for medication management cost $175 without insurance.
Do I need proof of a prior prescription?
No. If you’re seeing a new psychiatrist, you will likely need to go through an evaluation process again so that your provider can get familiar with your mental health symptoms and history. This evaluation allows them to advise you and decide which medication would be best. Although you do not need proof of a prior prescription to get a new prescription, it would be helpful to know the names and dosages of any prior prescriptions, because that information may be helpful to your Talkspace provider.
Is it possible to get medication online without a prescription?
No, it is not possible to get prescription medication online without a prescription from a licensed medical provider. However, you don’t have to go in-person to get a prescription. Tele-health options like online psychiatrists or psychiatric providers can evaluate your symptoms and write you a prescription, if medically appropriate, so you can get the medication you need without having to wait a long time for an appointment or travel to a doctor’s office.
